New Habitat Photos Time-lapse Videos

Visit our Habitat Photos webpage to view four new time-lapse videos showing how our Padden Creek Daylighting and Squalicum Creek Re-route Phases 1 and 2 projects are changing over time. These videos were created using photos submitted by the Bellingham community and visitors since 2017. They will be updated annually. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this project so far!

Citizen Science Opportunity - Giant Hornet Trapping

The City is recruiting volunteers to set traps and monitor for invasive Asian giant hornets (Vespa mandarinia) for 17 weeks from July through October of this year. These hornets were first sighted in December 2019 near Blaine, WA and confirmed sightings have been verified locally this year. Giant hornets attack and destroy honeybee hives. If they become established, these hornets will have negative impacts on the environment, agriculture, economy, and public health of Washington State.

We are looking for volunteers to set traps in 8 Bellingham Parks: North Ridge Park, Big Rock Garden Park, Whatcom Falls Park, Euclid Park, Sunset Pond, Cornwall Park, Sehome Hill, and Fairhaven Park. Traps and all needed materials will be provided by the Washington Department of Agriculture. This is a commitment! Volunteers must be active for the full 17-week monitoring period including setting and maintaining traps, checking traps weekly and submitting trap contents to the WSDA.

This is an urgent need. We are hoping to sign up volunteers this week! If interested, please complete a Park Steward Application and include your top three preferred trapping locations. Return your application to Amy Brown, Parks Volunteer Coordinator, at apbrown@cob.org. Call 360-303-6511 or send an email to apbrown@cob.org with questions.

More information about the hornet, trapping and monitoring can be found on the WSDA website.

You do not need to submit a Park Steward Application or coordinate with the Bellingham Parks Department if you choose to set up a trap on your own property. Please follow the instructions on the WSDA website.

Thank you for helping us understand and limit the spread of giant hornets in our area.

Construction of Squalicum Creek Re-route Phases 3 and 4 Project Begins this Month

We anticipate that project construction will begin on July 13 and conclude in December 2020, with riparian planting continuing through February 2021. This project will address water quality and habitat issues associated with Bug Lake. Squalicum Parkway will be reduced to one lane for 2-3 weeks in July or August during the construction of a fish-passable culvert under the road. The construction schedule could change unexpectedly due to COVID-19 response. Visit www.cob.org/squalicumreroute for project updates and more information.

Thank you for your interest in local habitat restoration!
